The Great Schism

The Great Schism is an event that splits Chalcedonian Christianity into Catholic and Orthodox. There are two different events that can cause the Schism to happen.

The Great Schism forces every Chalcedonian nation to decide between converting to either Catholic or Orthodox, and any provinces containing Chalcedonism will be converted to the chosen religion. Any Chalcedonian provinces that are owned by non-Chalcedonian nations will be converted to either Catholicism if in Western Europe, or Orthodox if anywhere else. After the event has fired, Chalcedonism will be effectively nonexistent.

If all the requirements are fulfilled the Schism fires on average around the 930s, but it can vary greatly and it's not exceptional for it to not fire until after the year 1000.

Event: The Great Schism with the Papal State

Requirements:

• Is Papal State
• Orthodox is not enabled
• State religion is Chalcedonian
• Year is 840 or later
• Constantinople is Chalcedonian

Effects:

• State religion changes to Catholic
• Every owned Chalcedonian province becomes Catholic
• All Chalcedonian countries get an event that lets them choose between Catholic and Orthodox
• Orthodox is enabled

Event: The Great Schism without the Papal State

Requirements:

• Papal State doesn't exist
• Orthodox is not enabled
• State religion is Chalcedonian
• Year is 840 or later
• Owns Rome
• Doesn't own Constantinople
• Rome is Chalcedonian
• Constantinople is Chalcedonian
• (Event tag: Event ID et.5)
• ***This event can occur with Arian or Nestorian provinces existing)

Effects:

• All Chalcedonian countries get an event that lets them choose between Catholic and Orthodox
• Orthodox is enabled
• The Papal States gain a core on Rome (118)

Decision: Mend the Schism

Potential requirements

• Is Orthodox
• Hasn't country flag "Schism Mender"
• Exist at least 1 Catholic province
• Exist no Catholic country with over 35 cities
• Owns 118, 151, 377, 379 or 358

Requirements

• Is not a subject nation
• Is at peace
• Papal States doesn't exist
• Owns 118, 151, 377, 379 AND 358. Each of these provinces MUST be

Upon enactment

• Gain country flag "Schism Mender"
• Gain 25 prestige
• Any Catholic country gains event "Schism Mended" after 1 day
  • OPTION A
    • Change to Orthodox
    • Any owned Catholic province become Orthodox
  • OPTION B
    • Lose 1 stability
    • Lose 25 prestige
